Thanked: 77Young shaver!
Not sure if this counts, but it made my day!
While experimenting with keeping lather warm, my 7 year old son came in and agreed to test it out... which led to full face lather.
Asked if he'd like to have a 'shave', he agreed, here's the details:
$2 Mennen shave stick (- didn't want to use good stuff on my practice lathers)
$2 Supermarket brush
2 bowls inside eachother to keep lather warm
Blunt butter knife 'razor'
7 & 1/2 year old son - the 'young shaver'
He worked through his first passes alright, re-lathered and went for 2nd pass 'WTG' and and a bit of 'ATG'.
He wants to join me for another shave in the morning and has set out his butter knife in the bathroom next to my razor!!
(I see a future straight shaver!!! Now for my 3 year old... actually, I better wait till he can tell the difference between blunt and sharp).Last edited by FTG; 07-28-2009 at 12:41 PM.

That's great. My Father died when I was young but I had a Grandpa who I use to shave with. At that time he was using DE's so he just took the blade out of one of his and made it mine. I remember those times and they are some of the best memories I have of then. Yes he may well be a future str8 shaver but the quality time now will last a lifetime.

Drats, my pop never did that. My son will get to do that with me when he is old enough.

Thanked: 15It doesn't get any better than that, unless you are fishing! Just a note of caution from the pediatrician side of me, make sure you keep your straight razors safely put away. Enjoy the time, but be safe.

Thanked: 363Awesome post. I restored a nice Engstrom in Bloodwood for my brother in law, as a gift for my nephew ( in the future) He will be born on Friday( planned C) I had engraved with their last name, as an heirloom item as he is Swedish. I hope one day he will pass it on as well, that was my intention.
Anyways, I don't have a son just a daughter, maybe one day so I kinda like to pass this knowledge onto someone.
Thanks for such an uplifting post.
Cheers

Did you say that your son set out a butter knife to shave with? I have shaved with a serated stake knife and let me tell you there is a reason why straights were invented to shave with instead of common knives. The reason, I learned, was becuase the common knife has all of its weight in the handle so that you can get leverage on the knife to cut what ever it is that you are cutting. This is fine except if you want to shave with it, as I shaved with it the point kept rotating towards the ears as the handle was the heaviest part of the knife. The straight has its weight evenly distributed throughout the razor so that you can get an even shave. Problem with the stake knife was two fold: 1) kept rotating with the point towards my ears and; 2) darn thing kept vibrating. I am not saying not to let your son so the job with a butter knife, just be aware of what I have said above.
