Thanked: 13It's an American joke, I suppose. Essentially, you ask the question "who/what has two thumbs and ______", then point to yourself with both thumbs.

1. congrats! you've embarked on one of the craziest adventures a man can.
2. where i'm from, it's the style to point to yourself with both thumbs and yell "THIS GUY!" (or girl) but i'm curious to know what the regional variants are.
3. don't necessarily buy into that 1+1=1 stuff. completely untrue mathematically (and I should know ) but also ideologically, imho. each marriage will be as different as the people in it, but there are quite a few successful marriages where 1+1=2 (for the mathematically inclined: should marriage be considered an abelian group? discuss amongst yourselves) can't say I've ever seen the movie, but the trailer was pretty funny, in a maudlin daytime tv sort of way.

Condolences
Seriously though, I think it's a great thing to find somebody you want to spend you life with. I think it's an even greater thing being able to keep it that way. Sure it takes work, but if you start early it gets easier and easier rather than harder and harder. I heard a great story:
A couple was on their honeymoon and the very first night of their marriage they took a moment to tell each other something that they appreciated about something their spouse dd that day. It became a lifelong habit for them and they never had any serious conflict. True story too as I recall having read it as such. Both partners have to play though. I wish it were easy to get my wife to embark on such a journey, but my marriage just takes more work than that. It's a good thing she's smart so that when I call her on her bullsh!t she usually sees it. I'm not always clear headed myself though.
This isn't the time for putting the fear into you. I just wanted to try and plant a seed that might grow into a beautiful forest for you rather than having to face all the crap a lot of couples end up squaring off about.
I'm happy for you both.
X

Yeah, actually there's a hypothetical that 1+1=3, meaning that the sum of the parts exceeds the whole, considering now there is a new thing created that didn't exist before, and that is the union that has come into being after combining the 2 individual parts. Philosophical gibberish only, but why not?
