I use alum only when I've had a rough shave, WH every day.

+1, especially on the cold water, before the alum and after. helps close things up. then witch spritz, let it dry mostly, then apply balm. that's working for me at the moment.

Cheapest price on the net, and they sell Arko too.

not the highest quality block though, or a very large one. I've used 2 of theirs now, I think though that I'll be using something else next time.

As long as it works for you it is not overkill.

I dont see it as being overkill

But I use just the aluminum block after each shave and then some after shave cream

To tell you the truth I've used trumpers Osama Block and the Classic Shaving one and I don't see any difference. yes the block is a tad rough but a few uses and its as smooth as the others and some do chip but for the price it works fine. I have enough to last me probably the rest of my life.

I don't really use an alum block much, but when I do, it's in conjunction with witch hazel. It works great, but I rarely find it necessary. Having said that, I really like having it in my shave den.
