I use an alum block and then a witch hazel based aftershave. Quite a few people use alum and then an aftershave. So not overkill IMHO.

+1, I use both. Definitely not overkill.

Thanked: 3Anybody know if I can get an alum block from a store? I looked online and am not fond of paying so much shipping for a $3-$5 block.

Thanked: 116I do use both alum block and aftershave, so "not overkill"
You can still find them in stores from time to time... I found 100g blocks last week while helping a colleague assemble a wetshave starter kit. They were really cheap, too.
