I use an alum block and then a witch hazel based aftershave. Quite a few people use alum and then an aftershave. So not overkill IMHO.

Anybody know if I can get an alum block from a store? I looked online and am not fond of paying so much shipping for a $3-$5 block.

I have a natural foods market here that sells it. It's actually sold as some hippie deodorant, and the price was about $10.

I think I remember reading some people suggesting that Indian markets are likely to sell it as well.

I do use both alum block and aftershave, so "not overkill"

You can still find them in stores from time to time... I found 100g blocks last week while helping a colleague assemble a wetshave starter kit. They were really cheap, too.

    hehe.

Alum block, cold water rinse, witch hazel, and then Nivea Balm.
