New Razor In My Future
I am seriously considering buying my first brand new razor sometime in the next week or two. I have a few options. I am definitely going with SRD, mainly because I don't have hones, money for hones or honing, or experience honing. Basically the comes shave ready + free hone makes it an unbeatable deal in my book.
The question here is:
What should I go with? I know I want 5/8 or 6/8, I know I want a Dovo, and I know I want to spend under $130. That leaves me a few options. Spike Point Ebony, Silver Steel Ebony, Spike Point Bismark in white bone, or 6/8 Bismark. I suppose you can throw the standard black/blonde/tortoise in there as well, but since I already have a good shaver, I'm really looking for aesthetics here as much as the quality of the shave.
Any input you guys have (horror stories included) would greatly help me out. This will be my first new razor so it is kind of a major purchase for me. I have shaved with a spike point before, so that doesn't scare me, and I know this is the size I like, but I lack the experienced ownership that most of you have.
Thanks
Drew
Edit: I just noticed the tortoise dovo is not so plain looking after all, and I very much like the look of tortoise, even if it is fake. So I guess we can throw that one in the mix too.Last edited by DPflaumer; 10-23-2009 at 04:21 PM.

Thanked: 2591there are other places to buy shave ready razors from. Have you considered anything other than Dovo?
What is your budget, there are razors that are much better than Dovo out there.
I have heard good things about this one
http://www.rasurpur.de/english/shop/shop.html
and Martin sends them shave ready.
It takes ~2 weeks to get to US from Europe.
Then there are the Revizor razors which have received great reavies:

Here another option:

I know there are other options, but I am a college kid on a college budget. I have several razors already and get a great shave every time. I have even done my own scale making.
The issue here is that I want a quality, aesthetically pleasing product for at or around $100. I am well aware that there are many other quality products out there, there issue is that all others fall outside of my price range.

I'd recommend new Dovo Black Bismarck 6/8. I have one in my rotation; it's ultra smooth shaver with very unique look. I believe in this price range the quality (from Dovo) should be about the same, so personal aesthetics decides.

If you are after looks and shave quality, you can really go with any of those IMHO.
First off, any of those should be great shavers (and they will be 100% ready coming from SRD). Now you just have to pick the one you think is coolest.
For me the choices would boil down to the ebony spike point or the bismark... and I'd probably end up with the spike because I like spike points. I really don't think you can go wrong though.

Thanked: 2591When I got my DOVO from SRD, they also gave me a coupon for a free honing service. I forgot to mention that in my first post (I hope the still do that), and in your situation this is a big plus I think.

I'll second the razors from Martin. I'm not sure which one you were referring to but I purchased on of the Solingens, the RP5N. It's a plain looking razor but it's an excellent shaver.

I do love the look of the Bismark for sure. I guess it depends on how much money I have next week. The Tortoise is looking more and more appealing, and as an added bonus my Fiance likes it.

Well, your the one who's going to be using it so get the one that you like the best. Within the same price range they should all be of equal quality.
