Dress Rehearsal
Greetings,
Over the past couple of days I have been doing
what I will call a dress rehearsal for the actual
shave.
I have this cheap Razor that I bought about 15 years ago.
The thing was made in China. What I have been doing is
holding it in my hand and pretending that I am getting ready
to shave. I noticed that Lynn switches to the left hand
when he went to shave the left side of his face. This
will work better for me I believe. I can't seem to position
it just right for the left side when held in my right hand.
Though I may be wrong I fel this is going to help me for
when the real razor that I am buying from Lynn arrives
and I attempt my first shave.
I have also practiced stropping with this razor on a belt on
a few occasions and the belt survived. Though not shave ready
by a long shot, it is still quite sharp.
Perhaps this was not money wasted ($15.00) but a useful training
tool.
Perhaps I can learn to hone with it-to an extent. The thing appears
to be stainless and is 6/8 inches wide. I would say that it is full
hollow ground.
Let me know your thoughts either negative or positive. Perhaps
by the time the real razor and strop arrive I will not be a total
novice.
Regards,
Terry

I think that to be comfortable with the positions you need to use with a straight you have to actually use it. You didn't say if you were actually shaving with it or just holding it. Some people buy cheapies and grind down the edge so its like a butter knife and then practice with it touching the skin which in my opinion works better. But, be advised when you start with the real thing go slowly and be respectful of the blade. It will feel very different than a practice blade. Kind of like learning to shoot with a .22 and then going to a .45. There's a big difference.
At the beginning just holding the razor properly seems awkward and trying to shave your face with a sharp instrument that you have trouble properly holding is a recipe for disaster. Its why most newbe's wind up with cuts and nicks. But with time it becomes second nature. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Big Spindur,
Well to be honest I have lathered up a 2 or 3 of times and have
actually removed the lather from my face. I had stubble when I
began and when I finished. I managed to do this without cuting
myself, though with a shave readt razor things might have been
different.
Well many thanks for you response.
Regards,
Terry

I wouldn't sit around waiting for any negative thoughts, especially from a group as supportive as us. You wanna practice, you go right ahead. Even if we did tell you something off about it, its your face, you make the decisions.

Déja Vu
You reminded me that while I was waiting for my first razor to arrive, I balanced a butter knife and a chop stick in my hand to get used to the feeling.
