First understand that I am not an HHT gotta pass kinda guy ... You can read that on many other threads
BUT
I believe that it is the test itself that has to be developed not the edge so basically you work an HHT backward.. You get a razor that shaves very very well and work the HHT until it passes on that razor then reverse the process on the next razor you hone, Hence you develop the HHT ...
When Jimmy said try on a DE this is usually a giveaway point as most people can't get an HHT right off the bat on a DE either...
If you can get a solid HHT to pop on a DE then you really should be able to do it on a SR also...
Try after you strop and the edge is at it's keenest, I use my wife's baby fine hair for an HHT, because mine means nothing, it will start popping at the 1k level, where hers I have to have everything perfect, or it will not happen...The other thing is make sure you are holding the hair from the root end or it might not work, again My hair just pops no matter what, my wife's has to have everything perfect...So you are developing a standard HHT for your hair...This is the biggest reason the HHT is not a valid test is because you have to take the time to develop it... Once you do that and you can repeat it then you have a working test, you really have to learn all the tests none are just an automatic, and use what Jimmy said take a DE and learn what each test should feel like with it...
But again in closing the shave test is the real test because that is the one that matters and guess what you have to learn that one too...Last edited by gssixgun; 02-20-2010 at 03:53 PM.

My hair is a bit too fine for a good HHT too. I raid my wife's hair brush.

Glen NAILED IT! However, I would say that once it IS developed, it becomes a valid test. The reasoning for that is that just like he mentioned, the shave test has to be developed as well.
Great post!
EDIT: I've never encountered hair that was too fine for it (not saying it doesn't exist), and I sometimes have used my daughter's hair (she's 6)

My wife and I both have very fine hair. I've learned how to test with it at the very final stages of honing, but it isn't much use before that. BUT, my wife's best friend has hair like 16-gauge wire, so I hit her up for some whenever she comes over.

As far as I'm concerned my "hanging" hairs are the ones on my face.
