I too have had a few duds. Especially when not asking questions of the seller before bidding and assuming I can see everything.
Once I get a disappointment in hand and go back to the pictures I realize that if I knew what to look for the signs were in the pictures or should have been.
Garry, if you look at the second pic (left to right, then top to bottom numbering) you will see the flat ground ribbons at the tang and the edge. You can see the wear on the spine in pic 5 too. The width of the bevel (guessing to be about 2.5 mm from the pics) and the flat ground line at the spine is a telltale sign that the razor received in-ordinate amount of honing. Probably had some bad nicks in the edge which were honed out prior to taking the pictures or was shared for honing practice by a small regiment.
I think that to get that kind of wear it has to be honed on a rough stone like a 1000 grit for a while. Getting it this way on a 4000 would be more than a job and a half.
That said the, razor can most likely be brought up to shave sharp by honing on a 4000/8000 Norton. Might still be an awesome shaver even with the wear. Depends if the spine width and blade width got proportional wear.
Learning how to hone from establishing a new bevel to shave ready would definitely help you in trying to get it sharp. If you are not up to the task yourself and don't have anyone close by who can help you then I volunteer for the task. It will cost you postage to Canda. Return postage is on me. If you are interested PM me for my coordinates.
