Thanked: 1Story from NPR: Shave on the Ganges
Here's a mildly interesting story I just came across written by an NPR correspondent who got an extraordinary shave on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi, Hinduism's holiest city:
On The Banks Of The Ganges: An Unforgettable Shave - The Two-Way - Breaking News, Analysis Blog : NPR
There are some accompanying photos, including one of an odd-looking straight razor (though the article suggests that it actually uses disposable blades). Anyway, I thought a few people here might find it interesting.

If nothing else . . .
it appears the story confirms the many cautionary tales here. The barber certainly wasn't using some miserable Pakistani straight razor. Those, apparently, are reserved for American rubes like me who bought one starting out, thus paying the Learning Curve Tax on beginner straight shavers.

Thanks for that. I missed the story and I had wondered what Indian men did for shaving given that they tend toward fairly thick hair.

From all the searching I've done on the Asian manufacturers' pages, India doesn't make any solid-blade straight razors. They make a lot of straights that take a disposable blade; most of those are decorated with Hindi writing on the scales.

Looks like the barber is just using water in the video.
I think it's neat to see this kind of thing. Thanks for posting the video and the story!
