I've nicked my ear lobe with a round point and cut my cheek a few times on square points. All part of the learning process IMHO. It all comes down to situational awareness. Like many other tasks, things usually don't go wrong until you become complacent. Back to the question at hand, I tend to think that a round point is better when you're starting out, but if you're paying attention, you'll be fine with either one.

I remember the first time I cut my ear with a square point I took mega abuse at work. - my favorite was one guy asked me if I was trying to hear my singing razor.
A lot of wiseasses where I work.

Just started using a spike. No problems yet. I treat it like a round point - no change in technique.
