Insan-eBay
Is it just me or are things getting crazier on ebay over the razors? When I first started looking last year some razors were going for about $20 or so and I remember some guys mentioning that that was inflated from what they remembered. Now it seems similar razors are going for $30 or $40. Am I crazy or is everybody else just beginning to catch on?

Not only are the razors getting more expensive, the razors that I am looking at now are the more expensive ones.

I was just looking at them...some of them are really nice...but a bit out of my price range... And in Europe there's virtually NOTHING affordable.

Ebay is horribly addictive, though. I've got 11 razors on the way. I've had to put myself on Ebay time-out. When you first start out collecting, you want as many different types as you can lay hands on. Hey, you gotta find out what you like (at leas that's what the voices in my head keep saying)

Thanked: 324I think there are more very high quality razors on Ebay today than a year ago. There are still quite a few really good razors selling for less than $20.00, but most of those need some work and they're not the cult classics. I think there may be a few more collectors today than a year ago, but it's a revolving door with some playing harder and some laying off at any given time. And the more experienced the collector, the less he'll be attracted to the lower-priced razors, so the average price will inevitably go up. The perception, then, would naturally be that the prices are spiraling up when, perhaps, it's the buyer's choices that keep spiraling up toward more rare, unusual or highly prized items.

I think you're right....the sellers figured out there's a market for them, and you have ijjits like me who try for any one that catches his fancy. Some of them are ridiculous, though. I won't pay more than I think one's worth, but I saw one the other day that really went too far. It was a Genco (nice razor) that had "light rust" (otherwise known as small pits) on the blade. The seller had a "buy it now" option only, and wanted $140.00. I explained to her she could get a mint Dorko or Puma for that. She dropped the price to $110. Still, way too much. Because of the strength the the seller's market, some think they're worth way more than they are.

I have a limit when I go to ebay. If I can get a brand new TI for less than they are asking or bidding I go on to the next one. I must admit I bid for this Dorko much higher than I would normally last week and someone overbid me. To many people think they have struck it rich when they are selling these things. People however are generally dumb. I was looking for an ipod for my son on ebay. I watched someone bid $404 for an ipod nano that I could buy in Radio Shack for $195. How stupid is that.

Exactly. I will very rarely go over $35 for one, and it's got to be exceptional. The most I ever paid for an Ebay razor was $71, and that was for a new/unused C. Friedrich Schmidt Revisor, which, if I were to buy one from John Crowley (he's the only guy I've found who carries them) would be $103. Out of the 20 or so razors I've gotten off Ebay, I think I've paid over $25 for maybe 5, and they were in outstanding condition. One Clauss I got was near mint. I now have 4 I got from Lynn, including a 7/8 W&B meatchopper. Those are the pride of my collection...well, those and the Revisor. I think the Wostenholm 6/8 I got from Lynn is going to be my favorite shaver, though.

Joe,
That in my opinion is what most used razors are really worth. Why would you pay more????
