Thanked: 1my new TI came with a chipped blade:(
I got tired of trying to make my vintage razors sharp (lame excuse for gettign a TI) So i ordered a new TI from classic shaving. it is the cheaper model 6/8 half hollow and it arrived yesterday. It wasnt super sharp, about as sharp as I usually hone my razors so i decided to strop it and then shave with it this morning. I stropped it and it easily caught and cut hair (didnt before stropping). well i was admiring it last night and saw that there was a chip in the edge of the balde that was about 1/3 bevel edge deep . I was planning on sending it to Lynn to have it honed. I am trying to decide if i should send it back to get a new one or if i should just go ahead and send it to lynn and let him hone it out. I am not really keen on having to pay the extra postage and invest the extra time to send it back and wait for a replacement.
Any advice?

Trapper,
That would suck, even though it was a "cheaper"
model, there is no excuse for it. I would just send
the razor to Lynn to have him hone it out.
I remember very recently that one of the members
bought one of the upper level TI's from Classic. I
believe it was the one with bone scales. Well the pin
was drilled crooked.
I was considering ordering a TI, but now I am scratching
them off my list.

I would recommend that you contact classicshaving and get them involved. Their service is great and they may have a solution that will cost you less and leave you more satisfied in the end. I would give them a chance in helping resolve this first.

The workmanship on the TI razors does often vary and I have had more of them with some workmanship issues than on Dovos.......but the TI is made much more by hand than the Dovo and the variations are more likely to happen. Yes, some would see this as a flaw but to me they represent an earlier era of hand craftmanship. Here though I am talking about manufacturing variations.......differences in the symetry of the scales, pins being slightly off center, etching and grinding varuiations, etc...... this is what atracts me to them.....hand work. I own 12 TI razors at this point and rarely buy anything else.
Chips though are a different story. If I openned the box, inspected the blade and saw a chip, back it would go, BUT, it is VERY easy to chip a blade when stropping. One pass too far up and into the rivets or hanging hardware and the blade is damaged. Once you have used it it becomes hard to know just when things went bad. I chipped my first Dovo stropping and I did it two weeks ago with my TI 1937 Special Coffier when not paying attention. I hve sliped a few times running the razor just a bit too far but luckily escaped any damage most times.
if it was me I would probably just hone it out unless I saw the flaw immediately upon opening it.

Thanked: 4942Couldn't agree more Tony. Love TI's and they are each one different and I also find them to have that craftsmanship quality. That being said, if I got one that was chipped, I'd ask for a replacement as well. Lynn

Well I guess that the TI will go back on the list. I do like
the looks of the TI with horn scales, it will make a good
Christmas present to myself.

I'm sortof lost here, but I'll post an opposing opinion. I simply do not believe classicshaving will accept a return on any razor, chip or not, that you have already shaved with. I agree, give them a call and see first. But please don't get bent out of shape if they say "No, read our return policy". They have one and it is very clear.

How about taking up the issue directly with TI?

I would definately send it back to classic shaving. If it came with a chip its going to go back to TI anyway so even if its been used thats not an issue as long as you didn't hone it.
I have about 8 TIs and probably 5 have pins drilled off center and not straight and thay are all higher end models including my TI damascus. As I've said before Dovo's have better all around workmanship but TI has the better blades but there is this QC issue with them.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
