    Default New guy.

    Hello all,

mgraepel has gotten me intrigued in the idea of a straight edge, and after years of painful disposable razors, I'm pretty eager for an alternative.

Just thought I'd introduce myself and give a heads up that I'm in the market for something to start me out with, and let you know that I'll be browsing around for the time being.

    See ya later.

    Smile Welcome The Seeker

Good to have you here. There's certainly a lot of great retailers in the Links and good information to be found in the Help Files. I found the Permanent Archives integral to my understanding of this art when I first arrived. When what you read there makes you wonder, you can use the Search function in the Forums here to help you focus that. If you can't find the answers you're looking for there, feel free to ask. Between us we've got more answers than one man can properly use. Most of all enjoy yourself. It's a great world of straight blades to discover.

Glad to see you here. I pointed him to this homemade strop already, but do any of you have any suggestions on what kind of leather he should be using? I'm thinking wallet grade, but I forget what grain that is.

Maybe ask Tony if he has a piece of his seconds somewhere around his house for a budget strop...

There are always seconds here.......I am pretty picky so the reject pile is quite large <g>.

I also still have the 20" strops left at a bargain for newbies, $22.50 leather and linen, same as in my starter sets.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Kind of brings to mind the age old question: What came first, the Strop or the Razor.

Basically, I'm looking for something in the $50 range. mgraepel has offered to provide a razor for me, but before I strip him of a prized posession, I figured I'd shop around

What are the thoughts on this one

And tony, what do you have in the reject pile that may be suitable for a penny pinching newbie?

I have the DOVO Ready to Use in 6/8, it's a great razor, at a nice price too...

    Seeker,
The Dovo you linked to is a fine razor and the one I first started with. Do be aware though that it will not arrive "ready for use", despite what the box says. It will need honing before it is shave ready and a hanging strop will only align whatever edge is already there. A hanging strop will not make a dull razor sharp. A hone or abrasive pasted strop will be needed at some point either to put the initial sharpnes to the razor or to maintain it after a week or two of shaving.

    PM, sent about my strops.
