Problem is, I already had an expensive hobby (fly-fishing).
Heck I keep my reel boxes because I want to get every last cent out of the $300 I spent for that reel. We feel your pain. Between all of my rod building equipment I have almost 5k invested just in grass production and I hate making bamboo rods! I sell more wood rods than anything else and the equipment was way cheaper.
But as with any hobby there is an inexpensive way and the costly way. I dive head first into everything.

I too use better body soaps and actually spend time on myself when I rarely did before. Also my knife making supplies have changed slightly, although not completely.

"Hone mange", yeah, currently I've a rather bad outbreak on my left forearm.

Less disposable income? Yes, but the income has been disposed of just fine in exchange for art that some uninformed folks call straight razors. Just like alcohol, don't over indulge. The hangover can be a Doosie.

There is more fun in my life. Looking, admiring, purchasing, honing, experimenting and using straight razors is just a hoot.

I enjoy paging through the SOTD photos. While I've not posted any recently, my photography has improved simply by seeing what some of the guys can accomplish.

More relaxed overall. The time I spend honing and shaving has the effect of calming me down. I was laid-back anyway, but now my blood pressure is way down.

Did I mentiion a much better shave?

    Here's one I just thought of -

When I was a kid I used to hate when my hands smelled like metal - back then it would happen from handling pocket change. Now I actually like the smell of metal. When I set bevels on beat up blades (especially quarter hollows), my hands and hones get black and that tangy smell fills the air.

Better skin on your face? Hmmm....as I think about it, after I started straight shaving, I had less skin on my face. Happily, that doesn't happen any more.
