My First Thiers Issard
Okay, I'm looking into getting one of these razors new, but I'm unsure of what size to get. I was set on a 6/8, but then I saw that I could have a 7/8 for ten bucks more. I've never used a 7/8 razor. I'm worried that if I got it, it would arrive and I'd say, "Woah, too big."
I know a lot of you guys use the bigger razors -- what advice can you give me?

Blade Weilder,
After using both 5/8 and 6/8 razors, I purchased
a 7/8 W&B from Joe Chandler. I too wondered about
the whether it would be too large. I can definately
say that I have no regreats on aquiring it. I would
defiately buy another 7/8.

I like the small ones I have.

I like the really big ones, and the really small ones...really depends on the razor. Overall, though, I think 6/8 is just about perfect. Small enough to control, big enough to have some real heft. That being said, I like them from 6/8 up. It's hard to choose, really, because it really depends more on the overall design and execution of the individual razor rather than its size. If you like it, get it. If you get it and don't like it, there's a great resale market.

Joe,
Hmm, speaking of resale <g>. I listed my 5/8 Thiers Issard covered tang in the Buy, Sell, Trade area. I picked up a few larger razors and thought I may want to sell this smaller one.

What are some of the advantages to having the larger 7/8 blade?
I know from my experience with the 6/8 that the downward pass on the upper lip is somewhat tricky, since the nose gets in the way of the somewhat larger blade. I guess this would be all the trickier with the 7/8, no?

Seriosely, you should select whatever suits your technique the best. I like all the sizes equaly. They all have diferent feel, and they all get the job done. With larger blade I acomodate my technique on the upper lip shaving sideways, and downwards only on the "coup de metre", that small patch right under the nose. You should try one of each size to see how they compare. If you don't have 7/8's, get one. But if you don't own 6/8's either, get that one first. Don't worry, you'll be getting your next razor in no time, that's how it goes
have fun,

Yeah, the sideways aproach on the upper lip is something I already do with my 5/8 and 6/8 razors, so I guess I'd adjust pretty easily. It's just difficult to judge whether or not the 7/8 will suit me if I'm going to be ordering it online, that's all.
I do agree with the comment about the 6/8 being the perfect size. It's a beefy blade, but doesn't look "over-sized."

Blade,
The reality is...you won't know until you try. I now prefer the 6/8 and 7/8 blades. And I definitely get my best shave with a Mondesir 7/8.
