For the cheeks I use 30 degrees. Neck I angle down to about 15-20. I measure the 30 degrees by looking at the width of the spine, and making sure there is that much space between it and my face. I have tried up to about 45 degrees, and down to 10. The 1 spine width away from the face on the cheeks seemed to work the best

Since you tried shaving with a straight for the first time after letting your beard grow for five days, you might want too try the opposite. Shave in the morning with a Mach whatever and then in the evening try your straight on just your cheeks. Make sure your razor is passing the hanging hair test first. If you expect too get a perfect shave with a straight the first few times you have been misinformed. Give your self time too learn. It is well worth it in the long run. Glen

BTW, should something like this happen again, even if you dont want to take on honing yet, I would recommend a 4 sided pre pasted paddle strop from Tony. That is what I have done and so far its all I have needed.

Thanked: 0I know that on my first shaves I definetly did not not strop correctly and it affected my shave. i got out my 4 sided paddle strop and did all sides very carefully and there was a huge difference. so the stropping was 80% of the problem. the rest was preping the beard with lots of hot towels etc. and the angle.
