Hey Mike. Welcome.
I remember the light of day. Heck, it hasn't been that long. Now I find myself in the dark corners of antique stores. I stink of mothballs from estate sales. And I'm developing carpal tunnel from the polishing. Always polishing. Must keep polishing.

Welcome. All that has been said in previous posts is true. Almost all of the success of straight razor shaving is skill in shaving, honing, and stropping. Almost all of the expenses are in a pursuit of a better or prettier razor, better hones and better strops. I didn't even mention the other items. (brush, after shave, soaps & creams etc......you get the idea). Buy the necessary and best you can. Then work on skills!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanked: 0I ordered a 5/8 C Friedr Schmidt Revisor - REVISOR/SOLINGEN. Got it from Tony he said he will hone to be shave ready. Be here next week. I put a couple of bids in on ebay one for a cheaper price to try to hone and a 6/8 Solingen Imperial (says mint conditon never used). But there is another one from Solingen Germany new in a box says it's old reserve. Still haven't got a hanging strop there are ones that are seconds. Most of the guys on here know which one I am talking about. Still gotta decide on a hone. Most of the advice I have gotten is either Tilly's starter kit or a Norton double sided. So many decisions.

Which ever hone or hones you buy, make sure to buy some cheaper razors to learn on.

These days I'm thinking honing is a lot like studying a martial art. The best hone? The best style? It's very true that the best martial art to study is the one where you find the best teacher who communicates the ideas well to you. Following the same logic, the Norton is the best hone around here. It's a little more costly but most guys here use it and it's a proven deliverer of the goods. You may be one of the exceptions who gets on real good with the barber hones. There are a few of those here too.

Thanked: 4Only two or three??
I started out thinking that I'd buy a couple, and chose the best one, then sell the other one. I ended up buying three at one time from one seller, and kept them all.
Since then, I've kept a really tight lid on the pot, and I only have about 10. That's since April. See, I've done really good!!
Of course, I've lusted over no more than 30 or 40 razors, and especially the one's Vlad has refurished, but I've managed to resist (so far). Of course, I do need to go ahead and buy one of those Fillies from Classic Shaving before they sell out, and then there are three....NO, four that I want from John Crowley's site, and.....
