Thread: A new video from The Art of Shaving - Discuss don't bash

A lot of marketing knowledge went into that video, too bad the shaving knowledge took the back burner...I'm not necessarily dogging the video, just stating an opinion. I guess my bowl full of warm, thick, & luxurious lather isn't quite as good as what I just viewed and "learned". Oh well...

and the sad thing is.. the art of shaving really does make a good product.. if they would market their product toward wetshavers instead of people who have no idea what they are doing.

They are doing for brushes what the Mach 3 did for disposables. Wait till they come out with dual auto-rotating heads! That said they do have some great products if a little pricey.

The marketing department must be thinking no one uses this stuff, so they have to find a way to move as much product in as short a time as possible. Such as showing people that you have to use a fist full of cream for each pass.

I came to shaving with a straight because I first discovered AOS.

I walked past their storefront in a mall in Denver once. Some time later, after moving to VA, I again walked past a storefront and got intrigued. Visited their web site, showed it to my wife, and ended up with a very nice Christmas gift -- a Fusion power handle, stainless steel stand, and a starter kit of products.

Like any good husband, I took the gift and returned it in exchange for a DOVO straight, a strop, and a different set of products. The next morning, I had my first straight razor shave with that DOVO and it was a disaster.

So, I then started Googling, discovered SRP, SRD, ClassicShaving, and now have added a Boker Tree Brand (with canvas micarta scales) so that I'd have a razor to use while my DOVO is off to Lynn for honing. I've also discovered a host of other soaps, aftershaves, and all the other fun stuff that comes along with this pursuit.

My point? AOS was my training wheels. It gave me my introduction to real shaving. It enabled me to sign up here and not feel like a complete noob. In fact, it could easily be argued that I wouldn't be here at all were it not for AOS. So while I won't buy another razor from them, and I won't buy another strop from them (not that mine is bad, it's just 2 1/2" and my next strop will be a 3" Latigo) I just might go back for shaving cream on occasion. Kind of like when I first became a fan of craft-brewed beer thanks to Sam Adams, which I rarely drink any more because there are so many better options. Or like how I came to appreciate single malts thanks to Johnny Walker Black and, later, the Glenlivet, though I now prefer Macallan and SMWSA cask whiskys.

By marketing to the non-wet shaver, they're actually helping spread the word, and their marketing has now directly benefitted SRD and several other online sources, at least with my dollars.

Holy moly - even when I didn't know what I was doing I never put that much cream in my bowl! That $22.00 jar is going to last about 2 weeks like that. And, you don't need anywhare near that thick a layer on your face for a great shave.

Yep - marketing needs to talk to product.

but for $125, (for the cheap one) I'd have how many more razors and creams?
My brush is still better 'cause actually use the muscles i was born with.
I could find a way to hang it over my mug, and it would make the lather for me. Then when I put it to mah face, and push the button, I could also shave my bathroom wall. That's how much lather I would make.
Does this thing have a speed knob? how aggressive do I want my brush? I could put in setting 5 for the first pass, then move in a little tighter, then even tighter, finally to the 1 setting for that bbs on my last pass.

sorry, this is a product that is just asking to be made fun of. I'll stop!!

Yes, the free samples of soaps, and gallons of pre-shave oil I can't afford are pretty good.

Marketing for a lot of companies can make a product seem less enticing. I don't think bashing a product, or one's advertising scheme is saying anything bad about the company. The first example I remember of that is Ford. They made the "Nova" and wondered why it didn't sell in Central and South America. Finally someone told them no one want's a car that won't go.
Understandably, I do need to lighten up on the cheesy acting, and deranged product(s).
It is a good start with what AOS has done for shaving in popular culture.
What I would love more is direct competition with AOS.
Yesterday, in the morning my dad mentioned he bought AOS products from the department stores when he was younger - the same product, the same name, different ownership. Just realized his experience is now more interesting learning that P&G is the current AOS owner.
