    Default Give me your opinion

Do I look fat in this? No, just kidding.
I'm trying to get the hang of evaluating razors so I'm not lost in the woods everytime I go on e-bay or to my local antiques shop.

This razor caught my eye. And, I'd like any impressions you guys can give me. Its rough, but I have love to give.

I'd bid $10 right off, maybe. A cent more than that and I'd need better pictures. I don't know, I just like the lines of it. I don't really have anything like it right now.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    TMike

Probably a decent brand since it's coming from Sheffield, but it looks like it has some pretty heavy pitting in the one pic. That's a lot of work to remove. Power tool 'a lot' I'd say.

Yeah, that was kind of my feeling, too. And $10s isn't such a deal on a fixer-upper when you tack on shipping and such.
On an unrelated razor - is there a name for the feeling you get when you bid on something you really shouldn't have and are praying to be outbid?
My wife is a sharp cookie who keeps track of the finances with me and knows how many razors I own.
I see, I bid, I dread, I'm outbid, I celebrate, and in a moment of complete insanity I nearly bid again. I shut down the browser just in time.

I can only hope I have enough strong points to compensate for such pathetic weakness.

    Hi TMike,

let me give you a few contra-arguments

Ok its good steel and it looks very interesting since it has this really nice writing on its blade

    but:

isn't it to long and to small - I think it will be quite difficult to handle. These small blades can be very nasty as you know. Perhaps it is one of this unforgiving str8s wich once were doing service in the cavallerie and now after retirement don't accept any new master ...?

anyway I wish you a nice bidding - since I am in the very same position with my wife ...

    That feeling is called guilt.

Maybe you like those, but the blade seems a little narrow. Also, there's quite a bit of rust and pitting on the blade. It's hard to see in the photo, but what I do if I'm interested in a razor is sve the picture and then process it to make the picture brighter and correct the color. You can even mak it bigger. If you do that you'll see the rust more clearly.

That appears to be a 3/8 razor. They are not fun to hone.
But they are good for the upper lip area and other tight spots.

I think I'd steer clear of that one. It doesn't mention the size but it looks like a 4/8s or smaller. Its condition will require quite a bit of work and I'm not sure its worth it for a really small razor. Those real small ones are tough to use unless your looking for a razor for trim work.

    Tmike:
Ignoring the relative drawbacks of too small a tool, you really should consider using a web-based sniper for Ebay. Bidnip and bidnapper are two that have been mentioned. Use a sniper, put in the maximum you feel the item is worth and ignore it until you get an email about the results. You'll have less stress with good success, and you might find that your spending will go down (no 'bidding fever').

Wayne, just sniped two other razors I really don't need

Thanks all. All good points. I'm afraid I'm in collector's mode.
"OOOOOOOOOO, I don't have one like that."
I will pass on it, but there are a couple others I might pick up. Do we have a up-to-date list of ebay names? I see that the last one was from 5/28.

bbqncigars, how is the sniper different from ebay's built in automatic bidding program? And, do I have to look out for your name at cigarbid.com?
