In my case, it's a good indicator of how long my compiles are taking... If only someone made a faster machine...

    Here's my $0.02...

I like seeing stars for time in SRP. I also like seeing the number of posts. Joe's on the right track with his availability ratio, but I think that the membership levels should be tied to both time AND number of posts if that's possible, not just a ratio. In other words someone with (> 100 posts) AND (> 6 months) may qualify for "honemeister." The current titles are fine; however, I'd add one more for the long time, big posters -- "Grand Honemeister."

Initially it encourages participation (can't wait to get past that "junior" part of my current level ).

Another idea ... perhaps the title of honemeister should be a certification. If you think you're good enough, send Lynn a razor you honed and see how you stand.

Or better yet... Since Lynn is probably really busy, I'll take on that adminstrative burden. Just send me your nicely honed razors along with the return shipping cost. I'll do a shave test to evaluate them and let you know if you're good enough. That way I'll have a nice supply of well honed razors to shave with all the time .

If you want to have ranks, great, but they shouldn't sound like they have anything to do with shaving or honing skills. Other than the "junior" I never paid much attention to those ranks. But when I hit honemeister had the feeling that maybe someone was spying on me in my bathroom and felt I had achieved something (sadly NOT!).

If the ranks only reflect posts, the number of which is clearly listed anyhow, what's the point of the rank? And why would we want to encourage verbosity?

I don't know if it's ever been implemented, but I once read about an idea for a forum (this was a high tech forum with many complex issues) where posts were peer rated and everyone had a rating for different subjects. That way certain people became acknowledged experts in certain subjects. When you post a question on a certain subject, you can actually get a feel for which responses are the most authoritative. For example, in our forums, if we took the rating seriously we could eventually come up with reputations in certain areas, and you could even contact the experts when certain problems came up.

Okay, Josh, now there's something interesting to spend some time on.

Slashdot works like that, but it's not simple to implement.

Basically, posts are moderated (marked up or down based on various criteria) by the members. A critical check against abuse by this is meta-moderation, where the members review other member's moderation scores. Users get moderation points based on posting frequency, doing moderation duties, and having your previous moderations approved by meta-moderation.

Like I said, it's not simple to implement. AFAIK slashcode (the program that runs slashdot) is open source and freely available though.

I'm half-asleep, so I'll make this quick. Just leave the old system as it is. AFIC it works just fine. However I'm always curious about site improvement suggestions, so keep'em coming Josh.

I personally think the post count is enough and I wouldn't mess with the titles as they are but if you want to maybe we should have the king and the prince levels and maybe someone can be a duke or marquis of shaving personally I'd be satisfied being the lord of shavers and off course the newbees can be called citizen shavers! Just don't call anyone the queen except maybe those guys who shave naked!
that sounds fine to me But I dont need a title to know I`m smarter than every one lol
    Kind regards Peter

I was quite happy to discover that I'm now a honemeister. I celebrated last night by using my newly-bestowed honing chops to hone up a butter knife. It was hard going until I discovered my mad honemeister skillz also allowed me to dub my 4/8 neistrom a butter knife. Eskilstuna steel hones better than pot metal, and that edge slices through butter, well, like butter.

No razors were harmed in this experiment. The wife has graciously accepted the loss of the butter knife in exchange for a promise to never again attempt to shave her legs while she's sleeping.
