My barber uses a Shavette to touch up my neck. I don't know why this is any different than using a straight because she doesn't change the blade between customers. I would think that as long as you dunked the razor in Barbicide or some other approved cleaner, then you'd be o.k.

Actually just using Feathers would be perfectly ok for this day and age. The shave is comparable to a straight shave, the experience is identical and the blades are disposable.

Isn't it curious that compared to 30 years ago, we're able to produce a lot more for a lot less in less time and we still ended up working a lot more to maintain a certain standard of living than we used to?

It's a response that Florida imposed during the AIDS epidemic, along with requiring disposable acupuncture needles and tattooing needles. Unfortunately the result is barbers that have NO clue on this skillset. Why couldn't I bring my OWN razor for the barber to use, like some women do at nail places?

Welcome to SRP. Hard to find a barber who really knows how to shave a customer with a sure enough straight razor. I know a few who use a shavette and electric clippers and call it a shave. If you could find one who has done enough shaves to qualify he/she might cooperate and use a straight you furnish. Then you have to worry about them rolling the edge when they strop it ...... if they have a strop.

Thanks for the welcome, Jimmy. What truly bummed me out was when my wife "treated" me to a shave a few years back at the local North Palm Beach barber's "shave center" and after the hot towel the guy pulled out a freakin' disposable Bic shaver--one of those five-for-a-buck pieces of turd--I gave him $5 for his trouble and walked out. Silver lining? It got me stoked to go back to wet shaving like a man.
