You guys want sympathy because its hot and you don't have A/C? I'm not trying to date myself here but I remember growing up in NYC before A/C existed and I distinctly remember when my dad brought home the first fan. It seemed like I was in heaven. Just try sleeping in a NYC summer without even a fan. Needless to say now I have central air and I'm as cool as a cucumber.

A straight razor shave is a pleasure not to be rushed. If I have to work and have to hurry I use a Gillette DE 1-9 adjust. and a boar brush and Dove soap in the shower. A magnifying mirror suctioned to the tile works fine. It is fast and serves the purpose.

I find the DE to be a bit too harsh on my face so I either go straight or don't shave at all.

i can relate. i used to think florida summers were hot until i spent a month in costa rica last summer. i only had a few hundred dollars to last the whole month so staying in a room with ac (if you can find a place that has it) was out of question. luckily most of the rooms there are right on the beach (we're talking twenty feet from the water) and don't cost more than five bucks a night, so the seabreeze kept me cool and i got used to sleeping like that pretty quickly. i wondered prior to that experience how people could manage without ac, a question which turned out to be pretty naive. also, the lack of hot water complemented the weather nicely until i went inland to the mountains where it was actually cool. then, the 50F showers didn't seem so refreshing...

I can identify with that. We didn't have a/c growing up in New York either and I remember that fan when it came home. I have window a/c units as I hate sleeping in the heat. I still use my str8.

When I was a kid AC meant you were "rich". I worked wheat, corn, and cotton fields in 100+ weather during the summer. I carried two 5 gallon water cans to work with me because there was always someone forgetting or running out of water. Even then I'd still have to fill one or both of them every time Old Jim the water man drove by in his pick up. Some of the fields were near a river or "lake", so lunch time was all about getting wet. I never thought anything of it.

This past week it's been hitting 100+ degrees here and I've been out painting the house right in the middle of it. Everyone says I'm nuts. I just stay hydrated and there's not a problem. The problem is not so much the heat, or even humidity as it is the ignorance that has come with mass AC. People have forgotten how to work in weather that's been around for ages.

Think of the boys in Iraq and afghanistan. I doubt many of them have constant ac.

I know normally a straight shave should not be rushed....but I'll tell you there have bee quite a few times when I am in a rush and I give myself a good shave better than any mach 3 in 5 minutes or less with a straight. That with the grain only and no extra pleasures like hot towels or shaving oil etc. Just a mug a straight a strop and a brush. the straight coveres 3x more area in one stroke than a mach 3 or whatever.....so you may want to rethink it...unless you are just afraid of cutting yourself when in a rush...surprisingly I have never cut myself while doing my 5 minute shaves, probably cause its a simple with the grain shave... Anywhoo...just my 2 cents
