Usually you can tell by the price and number of bidders whether its a deal or not. From the picture they look kind of rough to me, something I would pass on and obviously many others did too.
Of course sometimes the pics are poor and the descriptions are bad and in those cases plus a little luck you can sometimes get a real gem for a steal. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Well, I won them. I had to have the Excelsior. According to a collector friend of mine, they're among the best shavers ever, and exceedingly rare. They all look "patina'd" but other than the W&B at the top, I didn't see any excessive wear, or anything I can't fix. I think I can get 'em all back to top form. The Excelsior was the one I was really after, though.

Yeah, I was watching those too. I threw in a snipe, but, as I have enough razors to work on now, it was only a low bid.
Congrats on the win Joe. Didn't know about the reputation of the excelsiors tho. At the time, the boker was the diamond of my eye in that group... no chance you'd be willing to park with it would you? hehe.

Thanked: 2You can see "damascus" engraved in the second razor down. I own one of these. "Damascus" is simply the name of the razor, it is not true damascus steel. There is some belief that these razors may have been sourced from india during the british/indian "partnership?", hence the romantic name. Good shavers, probably much easier to hone than a true damascus blade!

Assuming it cleans up nice, you'll probably see it in my store soon. I don't know why, but I've got this nagging feeling about the seller...that I'm going to have problems with them. I'll know soon enough.

Thanked: 9um, just to verify what happened here: Joe Chandler and Toxic sniped on a lot that Bill bid on? Or were you guys communicating backchannel?
I am asking, because I thought I read somewhere that members kinda lay off things if another member is bidding - wasn't this the purpose for the ebay names list?
Having said this, I think I have bid on items other members wanted - seems slchughes is Toxic, and I sure seem to see his name a lot when researching razors. And I sniped a razor schatz was bidding on but he would have lost anyway... So is it OK for a memberr to post a message here and say something like: "I really want this, pls lay off" or we can just snipe away as long as we do not recognize any name? Or is it we snipe, and if we get it then we go to the earliest SRP bidder and ask if he would like the razor at the price we (I) won it?

Thanked: 346There are no rules. I generally won't bid against another member, but if I really want it I don't let that stop me. Doesn't happen too often, since the makes I really covet are a bit obscure.

I think I've spent over $2,000 on razors in the last three months, so I look at it as saving money if someone outbids me. It's not like we all walked into the auction house together and one of us said, "Hey, I really want this razor... please don't bid against me." It's also not fair to the seller to ask people not to bid either. What if the seller is one of us?
Don't ever hesitate to bid on something if you ever see my name on a razor. The way I see it is that if you win, you wanted it more than I did... and that's ok with me.
Here is the problem with laying off of an auction because someone from here is bidding. I have layed off several times only to find out that the person so adament about buying it didn't bid anywhere close to the value of the razor. And in every case so far they were outbid by someone else anyway. I would have bid much more in each of those cases and each time my bid would have been greater than the winning bid. As it turned out, I missed out on a couple of razors that I really wanted, myself. So, what do you do in an effort to be nice?
Here's the way I see it. Everyone should bid as if they know no one. If someone really wants a particular razor badly, they could negotiate with the winner to see if they will give it up. If I win something any one of y'all wants, just email me. In almost all cases, I'll give it up. I wouldn't want to piss someone off over a dumb razor. Gary does that too. He goes by skeetshooter. We both buy a lot of razors. Of course, the ones that I win will eventually make it to my site for resale in a state a little more spiffy than when I got it...
