    Seeing as I'm not at the skill level where I have the razor flying all over my face with one hand when I shave, I will, on some areas, brace the other end of the razor with my free hand to add a bit more control. Perhaps the barbers notch is there for similar reasons?

    I doubt it . The razor movements are all done with one hand. The other is used to flatten down the skin. Look at the manual.
