Lordy, it's a shock after the warm lather!
Just temper it with some hot water. Or do you have separate taps for each?

i know your pain. sometimes during the walk back up the beach from winter surf, my feet burn like hell. that is a totally unique and unpleasant sensation. the weather and water don't get too cold here florida, but all of our decent surf comes in the winter when the water works its way down to the low fifties, which still doesn't sound too bad until you figure that you're submerged in it for three or four hours.

let's just say i'm well acquainted with the early symptoms of hypothermia. no joke. when i start getting fuzzy in the head, it's time to get out of the water and stand under a scalding shower for an hour or so.

    oh yeah, and...something about shaving.

The cold water closes your pores and the result is that your face looks better. The hot water you use first opens the pores and softens the beard. So, really, the colder the better. Barbers have been known to use a final towl that's soaked in ice water.

    So... suck it up!

Couldnt he rinse with luke warm water use the alum block let it close the pores and tighten the face, and then pat dry with a damp towel with luke warm water???

I don't see why not. Or use witch hazel or Trumpers Skin Food, all of which also have that effect.

Skin food does that too...?? It feels so non intruding on the skin, are you sure?

I have certainly had occasions where, after a very close shave, the skin food left my face feeling "tight" in a way that I would most often associate with using an alum block or something similar.

Looks I'm in the minority - I LOVE cold water shock.

I actually don't get it as cold in FL as I would have liked, so I usually get an ice cube from the fridge and wipe on my face after the shave. Very refreshing!

I have also heard the changes from warm to cold are very good for the skin anyway...

    Cheers

I guess thats true...I think I just associate the closing of the pours with a sting or burn of some sort like the alcohol feel of some aftershaves and the slight sting of the alum block, or the chill of cold water.
