If you want a free alternative to photoshop, download the GIMP. It's an open source project, available for both Linux and Windows. http://www.gimp.org/windows/
I have ACDSee and it's good enough for a quick crop/resize/level adjustment but if you want to get into more detail, the GIMP's the way to go.

    Default Picasa

I use Picasa for all of my most basic photo post-processing needs, it can do the basic auto-contrast, auto-levels, etc. Plus its free, and made by Google now.

    Check it out http://picasa.google.com/

    Definitely a major improvement.

You might try playing with your image editing software and camera quality settings to see if you can optimize the image better for the Web. It looks like there's some noise creeping in from the image being overly compressed... What software are you using?

I use "normal" quality and "small" file size on my camera. Then I open it in Photoshop and crop it to 600x400 pixels at 72 dpi. Then I use Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature, which gets me decent image quality while keeping file size under 100K. I have no idea why "Save for Web" reduces the size so much, but it works great so I use it.

Another quick lighting tip: If you don't have a fancy digital SLR and hot-shoe flash, try photographing in florescent lighting. Usually these have some kind of diffuser on them that makes for soft, even lighting. Even lighting is key for showing luster in the blade without having it turn into a white blob with no detail.

    Keep practicing ,
    Josh
