Olav, I think you're right --- it seems from the threads I've read that many of the forum members do have common interests in the things you've mentioned. But I don't --I'm more minigun than black powder, more Porsche Carrera GT than 1930's Bently, more --well you get the idea. I do like using hand tools for woodworking though and fly fishing --- I guess it's the pureness/minimalist thing, not to mention the macho thing ---- hum? Maybe AFDavis11 says it best: "I think I just like it."

Gonna have to get back to you guys on that...as soon as mine gets here from Lynn...yep...should be here anyday now. However, I do have a 1951 Chevy. Nostalgic things seem to appeal to me in one way or another.

I guess I've just gotten to the point where I appreciate learning a skill and/or putting some effort into something to get a better result or at least one more tailored to my requirement. Whether it be shaving, smoking (hand rolling, pipe), making tea, etc. There are a lot of things that have fallen out of favor because they required more skill/energy than most people are willing to put into it. Usually that means compromising the end result. I'm less willing to make that compromise as time goes on. If it's worth doing, it worth doing as well as possible. Especially when doing a poor job of it costs more...

I think that we believe that there is a better than following the masses. Most people believe that the old superstitions about straight razor shaving. In the state in which I live a barber can not Evan shave you with a disposable razor without asking you first.

Twenty-six??!!! You are an old-timer! I started collecting walking-sticks around the age of 10; probably due to liking the old TV show Bat Masterson and Sherlock Holmes stories. When I moved to NYC at 19 I started carrying a nice heavy root knobbed stick all the time. Lived in bad neighborhoods and was never mugged. Attitude is the main thing. The most valuable thing I learned in drama school was: "Do it with authority!" (Then get off stage quickly to avoid the flying objects.)

For me I've always been a little leary of our modern disposable world and I appreciate quality and logevity! I don't know any of you but I would bet my bottom dollar that you all feel similarly as I do and I also bet no one here would be shaving with a straight unless on some level they felt somewhat digusted with our modern kleenex thinking!
