I was watching you hone yesterday and I mimicked your style. I usually dunk the stones, lot of water. Well I used the spray bottle you gave me instead and wiped the hone with a towel and got the feedback I was looking for. I believe the swarf and water was interfering with the suction Ive been trying to find, Thanks again Nelson! Looking forward to the next one.

I'm glad it worked out for you Bill, anything you can do it get workable feedback on ultra high-grit natural stones helps IMO. Any tells the razor or stone give you are a definite plus.

Bill, a quick question. I wish I'd have been able to make the meet.

Question: was the technique you are describing use the spray to wet and clean the hone, completely wipe away the water and begin honing "dry" on the stone?

Also, on what type of stone did you observe the technique being demonstrated upon(Natural stone--Bayamontate responded above). I just wanted to be clear before trying the technique on my Naniwa 12k.

I hone with a large bucket of water at my side. I usually dunk and wipe with the hand. Nelson was spritzing and wiping dry between naguras. This gets the stone cleaner imo. The swarf and too much water may have interfered with the suction that I have not been able to get. Well anyway I finally got some feedback as opposed to test shaving edges after a jnat. BTW I used a vintage solingen 6/8 that I brought up through the 1 and 5k chosera. One mejiro, koma aand tomo nagura as well as some light laps water only ozuku asagi.

While on tour in Japan in 1993 (I was a musician in my previous life) I watched someone honing a sword and he wiped the stone with a rag made of something that looked like cheesecloth between nagura and fingerstones in his progression. I started doing it and liked it a lot. I sometimes use a sponge but the towel works best IMO.
