I'm from Massachusetts and will make my best effort to make a meet up if something gets put together.

OK - so it looks like we have the following folks potentially interested in a meet about honing. We could extend the topic to scale making and perhaps a little light restoration/clean up of flea market razors perhaps?

I'm happy to host at my place - although I haven't run it by the wife yet. Let's see if we can get some dates working.
August is looking pretty rough. I can't do the first or second weekend in Aug (6-7, 13-14), Holli can't do the third weekend 20-21 (he'll be at the Toronto meet), and I can't do the last weekend in August (27-28).
So - let's look at September? First weekend in September (3-4)? I just realized that's the Labor Day weekend and folks might have plans (hell my wife might have plans) - but let's start there anyway.
I've never had one of these so I'm guessing on agenda but how's this look:
A. Bevel setting on a synthetic:
1. When to do a bevel set
2. How to set a bevel on a straight non-warped blade
3. Bevel setting problem blades
4. Knowing when the bevel is set
B. Progression through to shave ready on synthetic stones
1. What's next after bevel set
2. Techniques and pressure on straight non-warped blades
3. Techniques for problem blades (smiles, warps, excessive hone wear)
4. When to move on to the next stone
5. Honing on naturals (coticule, thuringian, jnat)?
C. Finishing
1. Finishing hones - what to look for
2. Finishing techniques on synth/naturals
3. Pastes and sprays
4. Stropping
Maybe - I can potentially lead a bit of workshop on scale making? I have a bandsaw, sander, drill press and actually a Bridgeport milling machine in my garage - so I think we're covered on tools to get that done. I could use some help on pinning - I've done several but sometimes the pin bends on me (probably too long).
I can provide the grilling and the beer if other folks can bring some snacks and what not we'll be good for the day. I don't know how much time we need - suggestions?

Thanked: 3795It's so cute when people try to set an agenda for these things.

Ha ha - yeah I know. I use to keep Discus (an amazon river fish) and we would do these meetups and set agendas and sometimes actually get to some of the items on the agenda and have a really good time. I set them to give people who might want to come an idea of what to expect if they've never come to a gathering of the like minded such as this. It gives them a nice comfortable false sense of organization before they get there and realize that after a few beers and ooh aahing at someone's vintage collection we break out the cigars and laugh our asses off for a few hours and walk away having learned a little and enjoyed a lot.

Agenda is a good idea to give some ideas of what we could discuss, but I'm sure much will depend on what people have and interests (or pressing issues).
Right now, my weekends are all open for Sept. I'd say just pick a time that works for you and allow several hours, especially since it's the first meetup.
If you find that you can't host, just let me know as I'm sure I can .

Nothing wrong with an agenda. Usually when I go to meets, I just wander around and see what everyone's doing. Unless I'm honing...
It seems to depend on who's there and what everyone wants to do.
BTW, if I can't make it, I can't make it. I know setting dates is tough. IMO, it's best to set a date and what happens happens.

That all sounds good to me. I certainly appreciate the thought being put into this and your willingness to host. I've never been to a meet so I'm not sure how much time we need, but I do know that when I start doing razor stuff... time flies.

Just checking in since it's been a little while. Labor Day weekend works for me, if that's what you're shooting for.
