Thanked: 39Cream City
Just spotted this thread and thought I'd check in. I live in Milwaukee as well. This flea/antique market sounds intriguing. I may just pop in some time. Are the prices usually pretty reasonable for the finds?

It would be nice to try to do a meet-up. It seems there are enough of us from the area to do so.
Any interest?

Thanked: 3795It would be quite a drive (4.5 hours), but you'd be welcome to car-pool to the Iowa Meet-up!

Anywho, I created a social group called "Wisconsin Straight Shavers." Perhaps we could discuss things further there/talk about other Wisconsin-related topics?

Collecting/accumulating razors may be likened to running for public office! Folks have to know that you are looking for razors. You must revisit the scene/shop/flea mkt to become known as a serious accumulator. You must train the shop owners/staff to watch for you and keep the gems under the counter till you come by again; that way you will be the person by the nick-name of Sum Guy! You know, the person you hear of as; "'Sum Guy' was here a couple days ago and bought all I had!" You may even buy some of the junkers that will come with the good finds. Educate the seller and they will do better in the future! Stay and bs with the owner of the shop to establish a relationship. Don't grab and run if you get a nice razor for a song and change. You become a person to the guy that you acknowledge as a person.
You get to see some really nice razors or stuff that will clean up. How about a Hjelstrand 5/8ths in ivory?? Almost NOS, two little rust spots on the spine? At a super low price. I wasn't sure it was ivory till I got it cleaned. And, the seller is looking hard for more goodies for someone that appreciates him, his store, and his difficulties. Remember $5-10 cash in the pocket is way better than starting a ebay store for him.

4-5 hours might be a bit much for me. But then again I have never been to Iowa .
I have been going into some shops that I have found and done just that, leave my name and number. But there is not much around Milwaukee.
I may have to go out for a weekend drive and look for that odd spot that would have a treasure of straights. Follow the white rabbit.
Geezer what is has been your experience with finding razors out on the west side of the state?
If we can corral members maybe a meet-up could work in the middle of the state? Just a thought

Anyone from Wisconsin/Milwaukee
Gentlemen:
Because of a packed work schedule and demanding deadlines this fall and winter, a meet would be difficult for me to squeeze in, especially the one in Iowa. My apologies.

Thanked: 3795I realize it would be a long shot for someone to come to Iowa from that far away. I just thought I'd throw out the offer.
I won't have a job soon so I don't know how long I'll remain in Iowa. If I am still here when you guys arrange a meet-up, I'll try to come to yours, and I'll bring some rocks with me!
