any ideas of a rough timeline for this thing?

After the spring thaw would be good.
1.) TIME: Really, anytime. I'm wondering- should we bill this as the "South-Central Regional" meetup, rather than the "DFW". According to the member map, there are a lot of members living within 4 hours of here...
2.) LOCATION: Have you considered looking into what it would cost to rent a conference room at one of the local libraries?
I contacted Cecilia at the Arlington Public Library- 817-459-6961
Central Library Community Room | Arlington, Texas Public Library
Cecilia said we could "rent" the community room for the entire day for $20.
This room has a 180 person occupancy rating. <shazaam!> There are also smaller rooms available at all the branch libraries. Same $20 registration fee.
Here's the best part: The rental's for the entire day.
I think meeting at a bar or restaurant is less than ideal. I'd prefer a quiet place where we can hear each other without having to talk loud enough that we're bothering the neighbors. Also, for those who may want one of the mentors to give a demonstration of some SR shaving technique, it may be better if we had a bit more privacy. We could always invade a great local pub afterwards.
PM me with whatever I can do to help.

Thanks for doing that legwork, that's a pretty fantastic rate.
1. I don't see why not, it's not like it's exclusively DFW folks anyway, Kenrup drives up from San Antonio and I think there are others that also drive a fair distance.
2. I'm definitely not opposed to this, it would be slightly quieter than the pub and also definitely bigger than my living room but I'm not sure if the lack of food, drink and smoking is an issue for anyone. If we are doing an all-day thing (not saying we are or aren't) we'll need to have it catered. I know a few folks that do stuff like that and could maybe hook us up with a deal. Alternately, we could do a multi-location thing where we have quiet, studious seminars in the morning, all head out for a lunch and a pint, then head back for more show'n'tell and whatever.
keep the ideas rolling, folks, the more ideas we have, the better I can make this thing this has the potential to be our best meetup yet

Oh, I like that. I really like the idea of morning meetings, break for lunch, and a bit more in the afternoon. If we can't lock the room up for lunch, I'd be happy to pack a lunch and do guard duty.
NOTE: The only "limitations" to renting a library venue are:
1.) We must be a non-profit organization.
2.) We do not sell anything (as an organization). (I don't think it would be a problem for individuals to "sell" strops, hones, etc., to each other...)
3.) We do not "fund raise" or conduct a "membership drive".
That's it. I think it's a great deal. Our tax dollars hard at work.
The rental "window" is 90 days. We'll need that when we have a better idea of everyone's preferred timeline.
I think you said you're in Plano. If you want to keep this located in Arlington, one of us will have to drive over to Arlington and get a library card, (available to anyone with a Texas license).
Or, I could pursue this with the Fort Worth system...

I think Arlington is the most central location, although I don't really care where it winds up. If this sounds like something people are interested in, I can make the trip down there to get one, I have to go down to Ft. Worth every few weeks anyhow and that's kind of on the way.

The library sounds like a good idea to me.
Thanks for doing the organizing.
I do not have a preference for which city, it is all the same to me.

I would definitely be interested in attending. Have yet to tackle honing, and though SRP provides a wealth of knowledge here, it would be nice to get some hands on advice/experience. I also have some very nice 5/8 straights that i rarely use that i would like to possibly swap to a better home, as i find i prefer larger blades 6/8 and up.
Cheers,
