Thread: Headblade ATX

I've been shaving with the ATX for several years. I use the Sensor Blades from Gillette in it because of the cost of the HeadBlade brands. Works great. Either shower shave or at the sink. I have to do multiple passes on the sides and the back of my head but this little thing works fast, clean and efficiently.

Been thinking about using a DE to keep cost down. I usually use my own oil concoction or my shave soap for the head - got tired of paying 8.00 for a bottle of Head Slick shaving lotion from Head Blade. I also now use Burts Beez for after shave rather than glossy Head Lube because of the price as well.

I have both the ATX as well as the older Sport push model. Based on my experiences, the older Sport model worked much, much better for me. Easy BBS shaves on the head with the Sport whereas the ATX always left some growth. I use the two blade Atra replacements that I buy on EBay for a very good price in bulk.

I find it much easier and quicker to get a head shave with the Sport than using a DE. Far less risk of cuts too.

I've used a straight for my face a few years now but I don't think I would ever consider using a straight for my head. Too much of a chance for a serious gash or slice with all the differential terrain I have.

I wonder if the Atra blades would fit the ATX aswell as the sport. It was a video of the sport that first put me onto headblade, but the follow motion of the ATX seemed to appear safer which was my reasoning for going with it.
Also tryed a straight for my head, second shave resulted in leaving the grand canyon on the back of my dome.

I was reading about the adaptors on the site, they said not recommended for the ATX, but they fit? nice, i will look into trying this out, thanks

I've used a HeadBlade off and on for quite a while now. I tend to prefer the Mach3 though. I think I have all of the shavers still somewhere. Including one with no wheels.

It is a great tool and is easy to use once you get the hang of it.

I'm not sure if the ATX comes with adapters - I started with the sport before the ATX came out and so I had several adapters. I just grabbed one from my shave drawer and popped it on the ATX for the sensor blades.

I had the same initial experience with the ATX leaving patches that the sport did not. I found I had to lift the wheels off my head with the ATX to get the right cutting angle - kind of a crap shoot. When I changed to the Sensor blades in the ATX rather than the headblades that came with it - no more worries. The wheel rides flat and the ATX provides a good close shave.

DE's for me. I did enjoy their Matte lotion though, and although their headslick worked really well, the scent of it was a no go for me.

Not that you can't cut yourself with the Headblade if you use too much pressure. But once you get used to using it, cuts should be extremely rare or practically non-existent. After a short learning curve I found I didn't cut myself any longer. It's all in using a light touch. Just like with DEs. I have no doubt others use DEs with great success for head shaves. But it seemed no matter how many times I tried, I would still occasionally get the odd cut or slice with a DE whereas I never do with the Headblade anymore. To each his own I would say!

So Sunday of last week I decided to try my Edwin Jagger with Feather blades on the old noggin instead of the ATX from HeadBlade that I have used for about 3 years. With the HeadBlade I just lather up in the shower and do one ATG pass right out of the gate with no issues.

I don't know why I thought that I could just do a single ATG with the DE just like the HB. I've never done it on my face, although I use a straight now. Needless to say. I made a pretty bloody mess of my head. Lot's of little nicks and one good size scrape on the top of the dome where I have a scar from losing a fight with guy who brought a baseball bat to a fist fight. So I alum blocked the @#$% out of my head and let it heal.

Tried again this morning using the same shave routine I use on my face. Hot shower, homemade oil, lathered up with my badger brush and some Taylor of Old Bond and did a gentle and slow WTG pass. Then re-lathered for an ATG pass. No cuts - couple of spots I need to pay attention to blade angle but all in all a comfortable and nicely close shave. Followed up with my standard Burt's Bees Radiance Lotion. (I like this because it gives my head a little shine. I use to use the HeadBlade head lube glossy but at 8.50 a bottle - seriously? I opt for this product from Burt's Bees and I like the ingredients list...and the price.)

I don't have anything against the HB - I've used it for a number of years. I'm just tired of paying the ridiculous cost of replacement blades.

I'm sold on the DE for head shaving - but I'm not sure I'll try the straight for quite some time.
