Personaly, i don't care for oil on a stone.. I would use water... But, i would bet he grit on that would at best be 4k... So, for sharpening, maybe.. But not for finishing..

Keep in mind with an ark you will be honing until your arm falls off. I believe the soft Arkansas stones are only around 2-3k equivalent.

I've been successfully using a Hard Black Ark.. I'vd used oil, water and water/soap. The oil is a bit messy, while the latter two work well to modulate the grit.. water alone is slightly more aggressive than the water/soap.

Give it try...

Lapping them is a PITA though..

I use the soft Arks on knives, especially my Ka Bar, It works for me. A little course for a razor, maybe for starting out, but not finishing. You could finish with the Black Ark or Translucent.

Save the Ark for your knives, it's good. Get yourself a set of Norton wet stones, 4 and 8k. You'll be glad you did.

My Norton 4/8 is my workhorse! While I finish on a Naniwa12k I could easily live off of the 8k for the rest of my life!!

If I were to drop and break the 12k I could live without it for awhile if I were to break the 4/8 I’d live off of peanut butter sandwiches so that I could afford a new one!

And along those lines a very old Honemeister once told me, to get that ultimate edge he honed on Peanut Butter and it worked wonders. But it's gotta be Skippy and it's gotta be chunky. And if you get hungry while honing you can always eat it.

But don't blame me if it makes a mess.

Humor has a place. however not when someone who is new is looking for help! That's what we who have been at it for awhile do (you have been at it a lot longer than me) and that is to offer sound counsel!

I agree with the previous posters. That is a good one for pocket knives but I wouldn't use it on a razor. Not that it would hurt it Any time I get a hone I'm not sure of I always try it with water and a pocket knife. What it does with that will tell me a lot about whether it is suitable for a razor.

Soft Arkansas are on the 1000 grit to the most. Maybe lower, and they are slow
