Thanked: 4942Chosera 1K most of the time. I use some pressure when setting bevels and the Chosera 1K on the base works great, day in and day out. You could get one baseless and use the Steelex holders if that is your preference. It is really important though when honing razors to keep your pressure even through out the stroke with the spine and edge on the stone at the same time, so having a stable stone is more reliable in my opinion as you work up the grit progressions. Some people do hand honing, but I see this normally with smaller stones and at higher grit levels that require weight of the blade pressure only.

I prefer the 2cm baseless ones. If you find yourself honing a blade with a bad smile or a bent spine you can turn the stone on its side and use it as a narrow hone.

Thanked: 1936I hand hone too...EXCEPT for bevel setting. I use quite a bit of pressure starting out and IMO that pressure must be controlled. In other words, the stone is stationary at a table or desk. If i didnt have a base on mine, i would be using a holder.

Thanked: 62I hand hold my Naniwa Superstones that have a base without any problem. I assume the base on the Chosera is about the same.

Thanked: 13I have it without the base but use the adjustable older for it. I'd hate to give up turning it on it's side for getting that little bit of heel that sometimes fights back.
