Mine are all sans base. The base would be just another thing to find room for. I do use a stone holder sized to allow them to drop in easily but sometimes just use a wet paper towel to keep them from sliding around. Keep it simple.

Edit: It's an even easier decision with the Super Stones - the baseless ones are twice as thick.Last edited by Tack; 09-22-2013 at 09:24 PM.

Thanked: 247I have stones with and without the base.
Pros of the base:
Has its own non skid feet.
Cons of the base:
Takes more storage space.
I like the base personally. I always know which side I honed on last, and it seems to be a little less messy (without the rubber feet I either have to put it in a holder or lay it on a towel...that then has to be cleaned).
I don't think there is a clear winner, just a best for you.

Thanked: 177I have the one with the base although I would prefer without it. Occasionally I use the side of the hone to hone a warped blade and I actually prefer the stone holder to the base. But it is much better than the Norton 1k and king 1k of which Ive had both, sold since then. Very good money spent IMO.

Thanked: 4942I like the bases personally. Total convenience for me. Now I only hone 20-30 razors 6-7 days per week, so I would go with what the experts on here advise.

The baseless ones are great if you like to hold the stone in your hand when honing. In addition, many of the baseless naniwa manufactured stones are thicker. I bought mine from this vendor, and I am very happy with mine.

Considering purchasing a baseless Chosera 1K myself because I like to hold my hones while honing. Can you also sharpen knives with the Chosera or is that a no no? Also, do you need different lapping stones for different hones?

Thanks for the insight. What do you use for bevel setting? That's the primary reason I'm in the market for a new hone.
