I have 2 Charnley's, one is used with water, and the other oil. I prefer the oil. I think it works better for some reason. It's one of my favorite natural finisher's, up there with the Nakayama Maruichi Asagi and Escher.

Although you can use water the stone loves oil, get a very fine oil and use it.. The fun part will be lapping the darn thing, when you get done lapping you will have second thoughts about that stone. LOL

Thanked: 1184I was just looking at a big one but it may turn out to be way out of my league budget wise.

Thanked: 3215That looks like swarf. Scrape it off with a chisel and spray on Oven cleaner, scrape again and wash in soapy dish water with a Scotch Brite pad, then soak in Simple Green or any degreaser and water until it stops releasing oil.
Oil will still get into the stone and they will continue to smell unless you get it all out. I put them in glass container with degreasing solution and set in the sun.
I don’t put them back into the box, but hone on a sink bridge on a piece of rubber sink liner.

I was hoping to see ardspachs and Piets collection too… ardspach has one as big as the side of a mountain.
Ol’ Mac, “McWolf” had one with the Whittle Hill stamp on the underside.

Thanked: 202And what is stopping you to come and have a look. If you allow enough time I am sure I can even show you the BIG one. I believe there is also picture of it in Margeja's book.
