    Default shapton glass stones

hi, im debating buying my first shapton glass stone, and was wondering do i HAVE to get the diamond flattening stone? or can i use my norton flattening stone? the norton is quite coarse and it give me the feeling that i could ruin a shapton?

I would says it's too corse and I wouldn't be using it on my stones. I would probably use 600 grit sandpaper on glass if I didn't have a DMT.

I have a DMT lapping plate (220ish grit) and I don't even use that for my 1K and up shaptons, I do for the 800 and below.

keep in mind, these shapton stones are thin so every time you lap you only want to take away what's required and no more. I have noticed my 16k is thinner then some or my others as it's the stone I use most.

I use a course DMT for all of mine, they are apparently 325 gritt but after a few Lapps they feel more like 600. I've had mine for years now, it's missing some diamonds in spots but still works.

Wouldn't know about the genuine shapton lapping plate, that's out of my price range lol.

Edit: http://www.dmtsharp.com/sharpeners/b...nes/dia-sharp/ I use the 8 Inch Dia-Sharp® Bench Stone

    And the lapping plate below

The atoma plates are meant to be great too, been meaning to get one but haven't gotten around to it yet.

    Yes that is the one,

This plate is not rare or hard to find, many Knife, Woodworking, and Tool places will have them even well stocked Hardware stores check locally first to save on shipping..

It is 325 Grit so is the Shapton DGLP, I own both the DGLP is a bit better because it was designed specifically to lap hones, the price difference does not warrant it's purchase unless you just have (read OCD) to use all Shaptons

no definitely not i care more about the price for sure....lets say i decide to buy the 30,000 stone is a 325 grit too coarse on that? will it ruin its polish ability?

No it is fine, let me qualify that and say "Once the DMT is broken in" you have to either sharpen a knife or use the rounded shank of a screwdriver to knock down the high diamonds before using them on any Hones then they work fine..

@Brighty I have been thinking of the Atoma 400 also but many of the guys told me I can't quite use it for "Repairs" like I do the DMT so it is on the back burner now
