Hmmmm, I'm in the middle of Amish country, Hard working yes, and if I'm remembering right a few years ago their were some pulled over for drunk buggy driven, an yet others caught selling drugs etc. granted probably the bad eggs.
some even will drive cars, and have cell phones. They will buy cars here and hire a driver too.
Cool purchase never seen one of those before, Ruday. If it works well as a hone it's a good purchase.

    ruday555,

Good call on the recognition of the stone. Lots of guys never take the time to honestly research their items. Glad you're one of the exceptions!!

Hang in there, study, research, experiment and ask when it doesn't seem to make sense.

Enjoy the forum and I look forward to your input!!

    Best Regards,

    Howard

Hey, if soapstone can work as a finish hone, what the heck! I'm willing to give it a try!

Has anybody else ever experimented with it?

soapstone is far softer than steel,it will not work as a hone, would be like honing a a slice of of a potatoe.

No, I dont think it was out of necessity, more because it is excellent for storing heat energy and then slowly and evenly releasing it. It is still used for fire surrounds for these reasons.

That, and the fact that it is soft and easily worked are the reasons, in my opinion.

    Neil

The fact that somebody drilled a hole in it to put that handle on is proof to me that it is pretty soft. Amish or not, it doesn't make sense that anybody would go to that much trouble to be the first to put a handle on a hone. It may have some sort of effect on a razors edge, heck even leather and linen does but the question is what and is it worth it. So, Rudy if you use this thing many times and find some real advantage to using it to hone your razors, let us know, will ya? I do think you would do best by sitting on this for awhile and thinking about it :<0)

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
