I asked AJ to send me one of these too, but he had already posted my package. Maybe in next order...
I have honed some razors and turned good smooth edges, but for the life of me, a Dubl Duck Goldedge won't get smooth. I don't get it. The Ducks are easy to hone, my Special Nr 1 is a great shaver, use it often, but this Goldedge won't get smooth. It shaves, doesn't leave a hair standing, but it's not comfortable...
What is the best way to enhance the smoothness of an edge with the LM? Plenty of slurry? How to dilute? Plain water only? Oil?

Thanked: 3215I like Smith honing solution for final finish, 2-3 drops on a flooded stone. It sounds like you have a good edge and just need to smooth it out some more.
Also I have had good results by increasing the finish edge angle, adding a layer of tape creating a micro bevel. I did this recently with a vintage TI that just was not quite there.
So tape it, 2-3 drops of Smith’s and 3-5 laps with no or light pressure, no slurry plain water, make sure the stone edges are rounded with a high grit plate 600 +.
Smiths is water soluble and will not harm your stones. It works well with natural stones, Arks, Coticules, Slates and Film by creating a micro hydraulic cushion.
When I have encountered problems as you describe where the edge is sharp but not quite comfortable, it just need a bit more polish. Changing angles and pressure can make a big difference.
You can use paste, but I like to get an edge to shave comfortably off the stone, paste will then improve it that much more.
My go to paste are Chrome Oxide on Nylon or Sailcloth and then .50 and .125 CBN after Chrome Oxide.
