Honing trouble
Hi, does any one have any ideas as to why my blade looks like this after the 1K Shapton bevel setting.
I've tried to use less pressure and less circles and strokes , with a little success .
Even after the 8K its still quite bad..
Maybe its the type of steel in the blade.
The japanese natural finisher seems to heal 95% of these lil chips.
Maybe its normal, im still a novice honer..
Thanks in advance

Great pictures! How does it shave? To my untrained eye on that kind of magnification, it doesn't seem too bad. The shave is what's going to tell you if it's normal or not. Do you have a shave ready razor hone by a pro to compare it with? What kind of microscope you use for the pictures?

What type of razor is it? Has it had any tempering problems that you know of? looks to me like its a steel issue. Also, you have lapped all your stones right?
State v. Durham, 323 N.W. 2d 243, 245 (Iowa 1982) (holding that a straight razor is per se a "dangerous weapon").

What type of razor is it? What magnification are the pictures? If its a good razor and bad steel you would have to hone past it, but that middle image looks like the bevel doesn't go all the way to the edge. I have seen that before also when I used too much pressure. Hopefully someone with more experience will come along and put in their opinions. Good luck.

Its my Hart Steel "Not A Replica" blade.
The magnification is x400
The first pic here is the finished Hart Steel..
The other pics are before and after on 2 Thiers-Issard .
I'm just shocked at how a 1K tears up the blade
All the blades are sticky sharp, i havnt shaved with them yet, tomorrow if i get time , ive only recently got ahold of this jap nat stone, its amazing

Thought that was 400 x . 400x is just visually T.M.I. for my taste.
Shapton GS or Pro ?
What's your progression ?
The T.I.'s look ok.Last edited by onimaru55; 01-28-2014 at 10:35 PM.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

oh ok at 400x an edge can look pretty rugged. Yea even with a 45X loupe a 1k edge can look rough.

Thanked: 1587Sometimes ignorance can be bliss. I never crack out my microscope unless something feels weird during the post-hone shave.
