Thanked: 2How is the Norton 1000?
I would like advice on the Norton 1k hone. What should I expect from this hone? It isn't as aggresive as what I expected so thought I would ask. I soaked it the first time about an hour and didn't seem to cut that well; then I soaked it overnight and it was better, but still seems slow. It is about like a king and I thought it would be a lot faster. The Norton 4K makes swarf faster. I flattened it before use.
Thanks

It works well. Some of the comments I see are that it is very thirsty stone and needs constant "spritzes" of water to keep it wet. The Norton 1K seems to load up and need to be lapped after every razor or so. I have found the little white slurry stone that Norton sells to be a great help in setting the bevel.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Thanked: 2Is there something that needs to be done to prepare this?
Would the King 800 be a better stone? I might have to exchange if I can't get this to work better.
Thanks

I have heard that some of the Nortons need a thorough lapping to start, but I think that was the 4K? I have fine luck myself. You may of gotten part of a bad batch.

Thanked: 3Yeah, i picked up a norton 1k last week to (first time honer of anything) and my first thought was that the
stone was almost impossible to keep wet (my only foreknowledge is of all the youtube videos ive seen :P), in comparison to other stones. Im managed to put what a newb would consider a decent edge on my wedge razor i just got though, so hopefully im doing something right. I would also like to have more info on the Norton 1k!
also it just so happens that i too live in Calgary, perhaps we can collaborate?
Did you get your stone from lee valley?

Thanked: 61How is the Norton 1000?
I have both the norton 1k and king 1k deluxe... I dunno the norton is faster but I prefer the king 1k I like the softness and still sets a bevel real fast... The only time I use the norton is when I'm trying to fix a bevel
I believe glen made a post comparing a lot of different 1k stones

I've never used anything but the Norton 1K to set bevels. Bevel-setting takes time (and inordinate time if a blade is "breadknifed"), and I think that makes the 1K appear slow. Also, if bevel-setting is 90% of the work to get a sharp edge, one can expect that the work on the 1k will take some time. The next time anyone considers "breadknifing" a blade, they should consider how much time they really want to spend grinding away on the 1K.
Because of recommendations in this forum, I did purchase a Chosera 1K, but am so satisfied with the Norton (and so freaked out by the green mess the Chosera can make), that I have yet to use it.

I've been quite happy with my Norto 1k. I did buy a King 1k and don't find much difference. When I get another 1k it'll be the green one.
As to lapping, hell yes every one!
More Norto feelings:The Nor4k is very soft/nearly fragile. And the Nor8k is...well it's just lovely feeling your blade "suck down" to that one. You know that shave-ready time is just 'round the bend, whether moving on to finer finishing stones or not.
I stand by my recs: Norto 1,4/8, plus DMT to get started. Soak 'em, they're _water_ stones, be gentle with the white one. happy honingsLast edited by WadePatton; 02-09-2014 at 03:36 PM.
