Thanked: 4827It has taken me a lot of looking and cutting to start to figure it out. You have a minor advantage in that you are not entirely exploring new territory. I think my one cast of pile shows how many stone I've turned. The one in the picture represents about 1/3 of my total off casts. I have not found a fool proof method of finding rock in the field that will be free of inclusions. The very small inclusions sometimes don't show until lapping has started. I am starting to get into some predictable spots just by narrowing my sampling to smaller and smaller areas.

Thanked: 4827That's not very nice. That leaves about a 5" piece. Sorry about that. I'm at work too and can't cut you another on for three weeks.

Thanked: 443Hi guys, great thread. I've been eyeballing a slate face outside Ouray Colorado. If I remember right from some discussion of the Welsh slates, you get good hones when there's an igneous intrusion fairly close by. That's the case with the Ouray deposit. I've got a couple of chunks of it somewhere, but haven't gotten serious about smoothing and testing them. How do you secure the rocks for smoothing with an angle grinder?
