Thread: I Found It Over There

Here are some COnats (Colorado naturals) that I'm working with. On the left is a piece of slate found in an old railroad cut, not sure if it is natural to that location. On the right is a piece of sandstone from the Dakota group. The later shows great promise as a finisher. The Dakota group is exposed for a couple of hundred miles along the front range, so there is plenty of exploring to do to find the best hones in this group.

I've had a very busy summer with no relief in sight so I am a little envious of those of you who are still out rockhounding. Eventually I will be able to get back out. In the mean time keep on rockhounding guys, I love seeing the finds

I've spent the better part of this and last month in a transfer of ownership of the company I work for. It's been constant cleaning, And restructure.

I've got hones to make good on for a few of the rockhounds and simply haven't had time to get in the garden and chop up the rock. And the few time I could have been out there things have come up like birthdays and bad weather.

I just got back from Norway and couldn't help but pick up a few pieces of rock in an old quarry in Eidsborg and a random piece of rock somewhare else, I'll post some pictures later on

Did you get both types of rock? Dark and light?

While their I couldn't differentiate between the pieces of rock, but I understood from Henk Bos's documentation that they can be heat treated, so of course I couldn't resist to throuw one in a camp fire (I picked up 4 pieces, to be certain on one hand and not to manny so my girlfriend wouldn't start to worry). The piece of rock on the campfire did get lighter and a lot softer but broke apart due to I guess the thermal stress entering an already hot fire

I put a small piece of metamorphic rock in my wife's kiln and it did not go well. It did not go over well with my wife either. Next time I'm fooling around with her kiln I should be sure to do it when she is out of town, they take a really long time to cool down.

When you take any rock and heat it any cracks or fractures even microscopic can cause the rock to come apart on you and fracture. If the rock you have is weathered it is already compromised to a varying degree. if you could get a truly fresh piece it might survive heating better depending on the individual rock and it's makeup.

I ben keeping the colorful rocks that don't fit though the 30 mesh classifier.
And the really Clear ones just in case might be a Diamond.
I seem to have ran into a problem I can't find where to get a 1/200 mesh screen
or a 1/300 mesh screen.
Does any one know where to get them.
Such tools would kind of be a huge time saver. Have realize stuff so fine take some
time to settle down.
