Thanked: 13245The Naniwa Super Stones are probably the most versatile hones out there, they are exceptional polishers, and excel at problem razors the 12k is a finisher in it's own right that is hard to beat at any price..
The Naniwa Chosera are fast, efficient, stupid expensive, smooth cutters that also pose problems with Crazing when not cared for properly, also the 10k is not really all the comfortable to shave off of unless you spend a ton of time messing with it.. So you still need a finisher after that which makes using them even more expensive...
So unless speed and efficiency is your goal and money is no object then get the Super Stones...

I think Glen sums that up perfectly.

I would go with the super stones. Yes the Chosera are nice stones but so are the SS and the price difference is in my eyes too big to justify getting the Chosera. Some use Chosera as bevel setter and SS for the rest. The price difference isn't as big then.

Thanked: 1936Splash and go...Shapton GS series of stones. Naniwa SS & Norton are nice, but I like the GS's better.
I haven't had my hands on a Chosera set of stones (just the 1K), but would say it's another of those opinion things as all are capable. What you need to do, before you jump in for a full set, is literally visit some folks who have them. You will gain several things doing this: Hands on, maybe learn something, maybe make a friend. You will benefit no matter what.
If I had it all to do over again, it would be the shapton's and not the super stones or norton's.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Thanked: 177Choseras over naniwas was the questions so since I've used both I would say the choseras easily for less lapping and much thicker stones. The only advantage IMO for naniwas is they are less costly. You know how less costly turns out right?

I have a Naniwa SS set 1k,5k,8k,12k progression. I bought that after watching both Lynn and Glenn using them. If they're good enough for those guys, they're durn sure good enough for this guy. They are what I started honing with, I still have a lot of learning to do, but they are easy for novices to use. I dulled a couple of razors on my Norton lapping stone, that were originally honed by Lynn (gasp), and I was eventually able to restore them to good shavers. Now I'm lusting after a Suehiro Gokumo 20k!
