As far as lapping plate recommendations go the DMT D8C is a nice tool. It keeps stones flat but also fairly quickly puts a rough edge on almost anything. For lapping on the cheap you can get by fine with some wet/dry abrasive paper and a flat surface.

Thanked: 443John Adams, Philip Glass, Arvo Part for honing. DMT 325 plate for lapping. Sometimes you can score a 3x8 for less than $50, but it's OK if you get a smaller (more standard) size DMT. Since you'll move your hone and your lapper quite a lot relative to one another, the lapper can be smaller, maybe 2/3 the size of your hone. Don't get any finer than 325 for lapping; the grit gets pried out of the finer ones and you just end up with an expensive bar of nickel-coated steel. DMT actually doesn't recommend their 325 for lapping, they recommend their 150, but 325 is widely used by SRP folks and not many of us have managed to kill one.
