Homegrown Wooden Boxes for Hones
For those of you that use wooden hone storage boxes OR a "stand/cover" setup. Tell us/Show us what designs/functionality you like or dislike or might do differently if you were making the box. (I R making the box.)
There are so many ways to make a simple box. I'm curious if some designs are more razor honester desirable. Some are just storage boxes, others are honing bases, others?
I may just hog out some walnut. Found a good donor log for that recently.

Thanked: 45Here are some pictures of some boxes I've made for my hones. The boxes with a separate lid have rare earth magnets built into them to keep the lid on, they are under the strips of wood on the ends of the boxes. It's a very secure system, you can hold the boxes upside down and the hones will not fall out. The coticule box has a removable brass gate which works well.

Yeah i'll just run down to the Hone Boxes R Us and get some ready mades...
I've made a few things.
I did not mean to imply that making a nice box was an entry-level sport.
I see you've made a nice box, now let's talk more about what you do don't like WRT them boxes fer hones and their application.
Will do (as i've searched about 6 terms to no good results) but i'm not just looking to be bedazzled by fancy boxes. I was looking for discussion of the trade-offs that might not be apparent from a glance or even a loving gaze lost in figure and carving.
Like: hinged or no, hinged side or end, leather hinges, latches, sliding gates or covers, stand, etc.
Not looking for a a "how-to" guide as this ain't woodshop, but something like a "Here's why i make them like THIS" sort of discussion. This would be a good place for that no?Last edited by WadePatton; 02-20-2014 at 02:06 AM.

Thanked: 284Here are a couple I've done. Very simple, but with stone in hand you can make very exact measurements and have the lid indicate on the stone for a very nice fit.
I take the stone out instead of using at as a stand. I like to use a lot of water.
I love living in the past...
