I had a similar stone from France as well, 7 X 1 1/2, and quite thick 1/2 to 5/8. No common backing either no sign of BBW. I fixed the stone to a wooden base, and sealed the sides and ends with beeswax, worked quite well.
Honestly i was positive mine was a coticule.
