Thread: Barber Hone

I came across a pretty good deal for a Raven Barbers Home that I think I am going to buy. What do you guys know about these hones? The few threads on SRP about them are a little old, but they had good things to say. The hone looks to be in very good shape with no chips or cracks on the honing surface.

the hone will be much older than the threads so the information is still valid. As long as the surface condition is good and you have done a little research you should be golden.

I know nothing about said hone! But I have bought a few other barbers hones over the years. I love their size!! Unfortunately, I have yet to really find one that's any good for anything else than my knives .

I am not the most lucky guy in the world though lol. Good luck!!

If the hone is in good condition & the price is right, buy it, they don't make them anymore,,,

Not yet anyway!

The Raven is a perfectly good barber hone for regular maintenance of a perfectly serviceable edge. It ain't an Escher or a Nakayama but you can shave off of its edges for the rest of your life.

I sure would like to see a company start making new barber hones with todays technology,,,,,I would buy one,,,

Get creative!

I had to lop off about three inches of my 3/8K superstone as it had a mind of its own.

Glued em to a 600 grit and 1,200 grit diamond DMT plate:



Balm - two little barbers hones, four grits.



Suitable only for knives though lol. 4" really is the min you want to go unless like me you use nothing but 4/8 blades.

Of course there are a few vendors out there selling 5" synthetic stones. Look around. You might be surprised - or make em!

How did you cut the hones David?

I've been thinking about cutting down a Norton 4/8 into barber hone size, it would be taller and heavier but would be nice for traveling 'just in case'. I have a friend who is a rock hound and I'm pretty sure she could cut it to size as I've seen many of her stones which are larger than the 4/8 cut. I think it's some kind of a diamond edged saw that runs with water for lubrication and cooling.

Now all I have to do is make it all happen and Mr. Pocket book says; NO!
