Thread: DMT Coarse 325 8"

After doing the screwdriver rub try the DMT on something besides an expensive stone. After a vigorous rub on an old driver shaft my 220 was good to go but the DMT325 had two diamonds sticking up that took some work on concrete to knock out.

As others have said use lots of water when lapping the superstoNES. I also find it easier to secure the DMT on the bench and rub the superstones ontop rather than the other way aground. It just seems easier to break the surface tension th way

Mikes right about securing the DMT plate and rubbing the stone over the DMT plate it's easier plenty of water though or they can stick to each other quite tightly, I honed my big 2in chisel which I use for cutting door hinges to knock the high spots off my DMT, also used a file as I found the four corners of the DMT to sharp and proud when coming off the stones.

One of the best hones for ebay specials there is. I've worn down a couple doing naturals and setting bevels on some tough razors, a lot of wedges.

Could never go without one.

The op mentioned the 12k cnat. Thats one hard bugger to lap. Lap them all day with anything and whatever it is will not last 4 years. Synths yes, cnats? No way says me. LOL.

The 20k Gokumyo is probably harder.

Maybe, maybe not I don't know how hard a 12k cnat is but I don't just use mine for lapping. Over the years it has sharpened many a knife as well including lots of pretty hard semi exotic steels. There Is no noticeable wear on the stone yet and it does get used almost every day for something. At the end of the day the cutting surface is made from the hardest substance known to man and they are not a cheep Chinese knock off. These things are a quality American made product that are built to last

Only time will tell (or someone who has been lapping cnats with one for a while lol) but my money would be on the DMT to still be going strong after 4 years........fancy a bet hehe

One way to severely & quickly wear down a DMT is to lap a Spyderco UF hone for more than a few minutes.

I haven't used a gokumyo, but biggs and owyhee jasper take the cake for me in hone hardness. They make ozuku stones look like king stones.

I haven't quite figured out how to use them in a razor rotation yet, though, they are too hard for razors and too slow, but great to chase the wire edge off of a tool.

ER...the spydercos are maybe harder than biggs and owyhee jasper. And not flat when they're new. I've lapped an 8x3 UF with an atoma 400, but I think it took a lot of stuffing out of the atoma (which is my preference over a DMT, but it does wear to a point of slower cutting like the DMTs do, it just seems to be a little more indestructible since the stones are arranged in blobs on it instead of one by one)
