carborundum
I'm certain that this is a carborundum hone, it measures 8x2. I got it at an estate sale for very little money. One question, do these come in a 1K grit? This one is pretty darn fine compared to most I have seen.
This is after lapping. It was covered with old oil and swarf.

I'm not entirely sure, but she looks might nice post lapping.
You may check over Barber Hone Reviews and try and go through some of the reviews that MODINE has so diligently tested and assessed.
That site certainly helped me out and saved me a buck or two.

It could be a Carborundum,,hard to tell from those two photos,,,a closer photo of the face would help & that side section photo of yours is a bit confusing, most Carborundum stones are not cut/ marked like that from the factory.
But if you think it is a Carborundum & it smells of oil/grease,,,then it could be a Carborundum 115 or 118 they are around the 1K to 2k range,,,I guess,,,. The 118S seems to be finer but I only have that in a 4 inch.
More photos would help,,,,,

Of course I'm not 100% sure of the type (brand) of hone this is. It did not come in a box.

It could be a Carbo,,,thanks for the new pics,,,does appear fine,,,,sort of looks like the texture on Carborundum razor hones that are around 3k to 4k.....it's just that 8 inch size that has me keeping it at a 115 or 118.
She looks like a good hone though,,,

I did a quick bevel check with this hone. Dulled a razor on glass then honed with oil. The hone was soaking up the oil, she sure is thirsty. Checked with a loupe and all looked good. Shaved arm hair, did that effortlessly, then tried to tree top hair and it did that also.
I then took out the chosera 1k and did just one side to compare the scratch marks, looked pretty close with just using a loupe.
Seems as if this hone is at least 1K or more. Sure sets a bevel nice, that's for sure.

My 115 & 118 set great bevels,,,I use them for wedges, they cut faster on old Sheffield steel than my Norton 1K does.

I have a guy that likes to send me wedges to hone. This could be just the ticket to setting the bevels on them.
